Martin Luther on Music

As some of you know, October 31st is also Reformation Day and I love Martin Luther's story. This is my new favorite quote by him about music:

When man’s natural musical ability is whetted and polished to the extent that it becomes an art, then do we note with great surprise the great and perfect wisdom of God in music, which is, after all, His product and His gift; we marvel when we hear music in which one voice sings a simple melody, while three, four, or five other voices play and trip lustily around the voice that sings its simple melody and adorn this simple melody wonderfully with artistic musical effects, thus reminding us of a heavenly dance, where all meet in a spirit of friendliness, caress and embrace. A person who gives this some thought and yet does not regard music as a marvelous creation of God, must be a clodhopper indeed and does not deserve to be called a human being; he should be permitted to hear nothing but the braying of asses and the grunting of hogs.

(Martin Luther, 1538, in his foreword to a collection of chorale motets)

A clodhopper indeed.
I totally ripped this off another blog I saw this morning.
I love it.

so i decided i should go back and read your october posts from halloween past and saw that you love coffee with creme brulee creamer, and i giggled because i just bought the industrial 5 gallon bucket of creme brulee creamer and i have no less than 2 travel mugs of it every morning. bradley doesnt beleive me that i could drink it straight out of the bottle. one day he is going to walk into the kitchen and find me laying on the floor a sticky mess saying "buuuuuuuurp.... i told ya.... i could.... oh i dont feel so good"

I loved that. It was really beautiful and then funny.

And Missy, I think the childrens choir may not understand that some only deserve to hear the "braying of asses" but they will most likely come up with a good enough subsitute ;)...when are they singing next?
